Visiting Researchers and Visiting Scholars interested in collaborating with SCET, may request an appointment from SCET Berkeley. Each request requires the submission of an application to SCET that includes a statement of research, a review of eligibility, and the provision of a J1 visa for non U.S. citizens. Each academic year, a limited number of visiting researchers and scholars are invited to SCET to conduct educational and research activities in the following areas:
- Alt Meat Lab
- Disaster Lab
- NeuroTech Lab
- Entrepreneurship Education & Ecosystems
SCET accepts appointment requests for a minimum of 60 days up to a maximum of one academic year. Appointments must begin at or near the beginning of the fall or spring semester and the typical processing time is 16 weeks. Visiting Researchers and Scholars are not compensated and SCET does not provide a stipend for cost of living.
Please review the sections below that will provide more detail on the eligibility requirements for each appointment type.

Scholars must be on leave from an academic position or other employment, and the primary purpose of their residency on the Berkeley campus must be to conduct independent research. Remote appointments are not permitted. Appointments are granted one year at a time, with a minimum appointment of 60 days and a maximum of one year at SCET.

During their visit, Visiting Student Researchers are not allowed to enroll in UC Berkeley courses for credit, however they are allowed to audit one course with instructor permission. The minimum length of an appointment at SCET is 60 days and the maximum appointment allowed is one year. Remote appointments are not permitted; all visits must be conducted on campus.

SCET Guest Collaborator
Faculty and staff from other educational institutions may wish to visit SCET to collaborate on education and research projects. These visits are typically one to four (1-4) weeks and do not qualify for an official appointment.
SCET Guests must complete an application and receive a formal letter of invitation from your host. SCET Guests should not plan trips, book flights or accommodation without an official invitation letter.
SCET Guests do not receive a Berkeley email address, ID card, or access to facilities or campus services like the library or fitness center. Due to limited resources, we are unable to host guests without an SCET staff member agreeing to host and coordinate your visit.
Third party organizations and groups interested in visiting SCET Main Space on UC Berkeley's campus, must fill the group inquiry form.
